NEW DESIGN: Pictures to be updated soon. The new design for 2026 has 2 large ripping teeth at the front and then most of the body has scalloped teeth/edge more like a hori hori or a bread knife edge.
Bob originally designed this root saw for the brutish work of severing tough, fibrous roots of trees and shrubs without breaking. Its blade is 3/16 inch thick along the back and its teeth are strong and aggressive. It cuts on the pull stroke. When you're spotting plants into a border and need to whack some roots, or when you're trying to stimulate a reluctant wisteria to bloom, this is the tool you want to stick into the ground.
Our 2026 update keeps the best of the old design - keeping the 2 large ripping teeth - and adds much better performance with a scalloped or bread knife style serration along most of the body. The new designs more than 2Xs the number of cutting teeth overall, meaning they will sever most roots more quickly and easily than the old style.
This tool works for roots up to about one inch thick, but it is best for those that are thinner. For bigger roots, consider a pulaski or mattock. Our new design comes in one blade length: approximately 10 inches with 16-20 teeth overall.
