Garden Spade - 9 inch blade
The most common garden spade traditionally has had a 9 inch long blade that is around 5 inches wide. It is used to dig and loosen earth in new beds, and to prep beds for planting. Like other spades, the very slight cupping in the blade is a feature to add strength rather than for scooping or transferring dirt. Where our Red Pig Floral Spade is made for those times when a very small head is perfect for the work (shallow digging, close plantings), the Red Pig Garden Spade is your standard, multi-purpose option. You aren't going to do a deep double dig with it. Otherwise, it is a great spade for a lot of general work.
The blade head has a slightly rounded leading edge to make digging in easier, and it tapers from around 4 3/4 inches near the treads out to around 5 1/4 inches at the leading edge. The advantage here is that each thrust of the tool cuts at its widest closer to the leading edge reducing the chance of damaging nearby plants. Our Rabbiting or Poacher's Spade, on the other hand, has a rounded leading edge and a taper that goes wider from the treads to narrower at the leading edge, providing some advantage when digging deeper. We mount our spades standard on a 48" helve, and if you are on the smaller side we can even put it on a 44" helve for you as well at no extra charge. Just add a note when you checkout that you prefer the smaller handle. The blade has slightly rounded cutting edge and is about 8-9 inches long and 5 inches wide. The straps are roughly 8" and have 2 rivets. Overall it weighs about 3.5-4 lbs and measures to be about 54-56".
