Scarifying is also an effective technique for blending amendments into topsoil. The amendments are scattered atop the soil and then worked in vigorously. Another use of a scarifier is to uproot and eliminate weed seedlings. This is best done when the weed seeds have just germinated and formed one or two leaves. At this point the plant is most vulnerable. All of the energy stored in the seed has been used up making the first lead or two, but there hasn't been enough time, or leaf surface, to replenish that expended energy through photosynthesis. Just loosen the ground and most of the seedlings will croak. \u003cbr\u003eOur scarifier has 3 tines set about 1-1 1\/2\" apart and is made of 7\/16 or 1\/2 steel.  It will work easily to a depth of 3 inches and, with a bit of extra effort (and in mild soil) up to 5 or 6 inches.
